About this tool

File sizes are written in two ways that look alike. Storage makers and many websites use 1000: 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Operating systems and memory use 1024: 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. Type a size to see it both ways side by side, so you can tell whether a file fits a limit such as 2 MB or 200 KB.

Common questions

Is 1 MB 1000 KB or 1024 KB?

1,000 kB in the decimal system. In the binary system 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB. Many upload limits do not say which they use, so keep a little room.

Which should I use for an upload limit?

If the limit says KB or MB, play safe and stay under the 1000-based figure, which is the smaller number of bytes.

How big is 100 KB in bytes?

100,000 bytes in decimal units, or 102,400 bytes for 100 KiB.

Is it free to use?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so what you enter stays on your device.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
