How to look up an IFSC
- Type the 11-character IFSC from a cheque, passbook or the payee's message.
- Select Look up.
- Check the bank and branch, and copy the details if you need them.
Examples
SBIN0000001 is State Bank of India, Kolkata Main branch, at Samriddhi Bhawan, 1 Strand Road, Kolkata. Its MICR is 700002021, and it takes NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and UPI.
HDFC0CAGSBK is listed under HDFC Bank, but the branch is The AGS Employees Co-op Bank in Bengaluru. Money sent to it reaches that co-operative bank.
SBIN1000001 is refused straight away, because the fifth character of every IFSC is the digit 0.
About this tool
Before you add a payee or send money by NEFT or RTGS, check that the IFSC belongs to the branch you expect. Type the 11-character code and see the bank, branch, address, city, district, state, MICR and SWIFT codes, and which payment systems the branch supports. A code with the wrong shape is caught before anything is looked up.
Common questions
What does an IFSC look like?
It has 11 characters: 4 letters for the bank, then the digit 0, then 6 letters or digits for the branch. SBIN0000001 is State Bank of India's Kolkata Main branch.
Where does the data come from?
From Razorpay's open IFSC dataset, which is built from the Reserve Bank of India's branch lists and published under the MIT licence. Answers are kept for 30 days, so check with your bank before you send a large amount.
What is the MICR code?
A 9-digit code printed along the bottom of a cheque, used for cheque clearing. The first three digits stand for the city, the next three for the bank and the last three for the branch.
Why does my co-operative bank show another bank's IFSC?
Some co-operative and small banks use a sub-member code from a larger bank. HDFC0CAGSBK, for example, is The AGS Employees Co-operative Bank in Bengaluru, reached through HDFC Bank.
Is it free to use?
Yes. There's no sign-up for everyday use, and a free account raises the daily limit if you need more.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
Is what I enter kept?
It's only used to get your result. Some public answers, such as the branches for a pincode, are kept for a while so the next lookup is quicker, but nothing links them to you.
