How to calculate your income tax

  1. Choose the year and your age, and type your salary and other income.
  2. Add your old regime deductions, if you have any.
  3. Compare the two totals and read the slab-by-slab working.

Examples

Salary ₹12.75 lakh, new regime: the ₹75,000 standard deduction leaves ₹12 lakh, the slab tax of ₹60,000 is cancelled by the rebate, and the tax is nil.

Salary ₹13.25 lakh, new regime: total income is ₹12.5 lakh and the slab tax is ₹67,500. Marginal relief cuts it to the ₹50,000 above ₹12 lakh, so with cess you pay ₹52,000 instead of ₹70,200.

Salary ₹15 lakh with ₹1.5 lakh in 80C and ₹25,000 of health insurance: the new regime costs ₹97,500 and the old regime ₹2,02,800, so the new regime is ₹1,05,300 lower.

Salary ₹20 lakh, new regime: total income is ₹19.25 lakh, the slab tax is ₹1,85,000, and with 4% cess the tax is ₹1,92,400, about ₹16,033 a month.

About this tool

Enter your salary and any other income, and the tax under both regimes appears side by side, slab by slab. Tax year 2026-27 is the first year under the Income-tax Act, 2025, which replaced the 1961 Act on 1 April 2026. Budget 2026 kept the rates, the ₹75,000 standard deduction, the rebate, surcharge and the 4% cess. Old regime deductions such as 80C, 80D and home loan interest only count in the old column.

Common questions

Did Budget 2026 change the tax slabs?

No. The Finance Bill 2026 left the rates as they were. The new regime is nil up to ₹4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% in steps of ₹4 lakh, and 30% above ₹24 lakh.

Why is there no tax up to ₹12 lakh in the new regime?

A resident individual gets a rebate of up to ₹60,000 when total income is ₹12 lakh or less, which is all the tax on that income. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salary of ₹12.75 lakh pays nothing. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax from being more than the income above ₹12 lakh.

What changed with the Income-tax Act, 2025?

It replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. The year is now called a tax year, and sections have new numbers, such as section 123 for what was 80C and section 156 for the 87A rebate. The tax rates stayed the same.

Can I switch between the regimes?

If you have no business income, you choose each year when you file your return. If you have business income and leave the new regime, you can come back to it only once.

Is surcharge included?

Yes. It is 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore and 25% above ₹2 crore, and 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only, with marginal relief at each step. The 4% cess is added on top.

Is it free to use?
