About this tool

Type a whole number and get its Roman numeral, such as 1994 as MCMXCIV. Standard numerals run from 1 to 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). A tick box switches on the overline form, where a bar over a letter means a thousand times its value, which extends the range to 3,999,999. There is no symbol for zero.

Common questions

How do I write 4 and 9?

4 is IV (one before five) and 9 is IX (one before ten). Roman numerals avoid writing a letter four times in a row.

Why does it stop at 3999?

Standard numerals have no symbol above M, and M can repeat only three times. Larger numbers use an overline.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

Not in the standard system. Romans had a word, nulla, but no symbol.

Is it free to use?
