How to estimate an electricity bill
- Add your appliances, or choose I know my units and type them in.
- Replace the example tariff with the slabs, fixed charge and duty on your bill.
- Read the estimated bill, the slab working and each appliance's share.
Examples
A 2BHK with four 9 W LED bulbs for 6 hours, three 75 W fans for 10 hours, a 1.5 ton AC at 1,500 W for 6 hours, a fridge averaging 40 W and an 80 W TV for 4 hours uses 382.38 units in 30 days. On the example tariff that's an estimated ₹2,424.49.
250 units on the example tariff (₹3.50 up to 100 units, ₹6 up to 300, ₹8 up to 500, ₹9.50 above that, ₹100 fixed and 5% duty): ₹1,250 of energy, ₹100 fixed and ₹67.50 duty, ₹1,417.50 in all. Charging all 250 units at ₹6 instead gives ₹1,680.
One 1,500 W AC run 8 hours a day for 30 days uses 1,500 x 8 x 30 / 1000 = 360 units.
About this tool
Add your appliances with their wattage, how many you have and the hours you use them each day, or pick from a list of typical wattages. The page adds up the units (kWh) for the month, then estimates the bill from slab rates, a fixed charge and duty. The starting tariff is an example, not any DISCOM's, so copy the slabs from your own bill or your state's tariff order. You can also type your units directly.
Common questions
How are units worked out?
Units (kWh) = watts x quantity x hours a day x days / 1000. Three 75 W fans used 10 hours a day for 30 days use 67.5 units.
What does telescopic mean?
Each slab's rate applies only to the units inside it. With ₹3.50 for the first 100 units and ₹6 after that, 250 units cost 100 x 3.50 + 150 x 6 = ₹1,250. Some tariffs instead charge all units at the rate of the slab the total reaches, and you can choose that too.
Why is my real bill different?
Bills can add fuel adjustment charges, meter rent, subsidies and other items that vary by state and by month. This is an estimate to help you see where the units go.
Why doesn't the page use my DISCOM's tariff?
Each state's regulator sets its own slabs and charges, and they change, so a built-in tariff would often be out of date. Copy the current one from your bill or your DISCOM's website.
Are the typical wattages accurate?
They're rough figures for common models. The rating plate or star label gives your appliance's real wattage. Fridges and ACs switch on and off, so over a day they use less than their full wattage suggests.
