How to split a bill

  1. Add the names of everyone sharing, with UPI IDs if you want pay links.
  2. Add each bill with its amount, who paid and how to split it.
  3. Read the balances and who pays whom, then copy the summary.

Examples

An electricity bill of ₹2,347 split equally between three flatmates comes to ₹782.34, ₹782.33 and ₹782.33. If Asha paid it, Ravi and Meera each pay her ₹782.33.

A dinner of ₹3,600 split by shares, with a couple at 2 shares and two friends at 1 each: the couple's share is ₹1,800 and each friend's is ₹900.

A grocery bill of ₹1,450 split by exact amounts, with ₹950 of Ravi's items and ₹500 of Meera's. If the amounts typed come to ₹1,400 instead, the page says they are ₹50 less than the bill.

About this tool

Add the people sharing, then each bill: what it was for, the amount, who paid and who shares it. Split it equally, by exact amounts, or by shares when someone should pay more. The page works out each person's balance to the paisa and a short list of who pays whom. Copy the summary into WhatsApp, and add UPI IDs to get a pay link for each payment.

Common questions

How are paise handled when a bill doesn't divide evenly?

Every share is worked out to the paisa, and the spare paise go to the first people in the list. ₹100 split three ways is ₹33.34, ₹33.33 and ₹33.33, so the shares always add up to the bill.

Is the who-pays-whom list the fewest payments possible?

It's short, but not always the shortest. The person who owes the most pays the person owed the most, and so on, which never takes more payments than one fewer than the number of people. Finding the true minimum every time is a much harder problem.

How does splitting by shares work?

Give each person a number of shares. A couple counted as 2 shares pays twice as much as someone with 1. Leave a person at 0 to leave them out of that bill.

What does Pay by UPI do?

It opens a UPI app on a phone with the payee's UPI ID and the amount filled in. You still confirm the payment in the app, so check the name it shows first.
