How to check a website's favicon
- Enter the website's address.
- Select Check icons.
- Look at each icon and fix anything marked as missing or wrong.
Examples
A complete set. A page that links icon-32.png, a favicon.ico holding 16, 32 and 48 pixel images, a 180×180 apple-touch-icon.png and a manifest with 192 and 512 pixel icons passes every check.
A wrong size label. <link rel="icon" sizes="32x32" href="/small.png"> pointing to a 16×16 file gets a warning that the declared size doesn't match the real one.
Only an SVG. A site whose only icon link is logo.svg gets a suggestion to add a PNG or ICO, because Google Search doesn't list SVG among its favicon formats.
No touch icon. A site with only /favicon.ico is told there is no Apple touch icon, the picture iPhones and iPads use for a home-screen shortcut.
About this tool
Enter a website to find all of its icons: the icon links in the page, /favicon.ico, Apple touch icons and the icons in its web app manifest. Each file is fetched with a size limit and shown at its real size, and every size inside an .ico file is listed. You then see what is missing or wrong, judged against Google's favicon guidelines and what browsers need.
Common questions
What does Google need to show my favicon?
A link tag such as rel="icon" on the home page, a square image of at least 8 by 8 pixels, and a file that Googlebot-Image may crawl. Google recommends making it larger than 48 by 48 pixels.
Which Apple touch icon size should I use?
180 by 180 pixels is the usual size for current iPhones and iPads. Apple's own guide to this is archived, so treat the size as common practice rather than a rule.
Why does it ask for 192 and 512 pixel manifest icons?
Chrome and other Chromium browsers need at least a 192 by 192 and a 512 by 512 icon in the manifest to install a site as an app.
Is an SVG favicon enough?
Not for Google Search, which supports BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM and TIFF favicons. Keep the SVG for browsers and add a PNG or ICO next to it.
Is it free to use?
Yes. There's no sign-up for everyday use, and a free account raises the daily limit if you need more.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
Is what I enter kept?
It's only used to get your result. Some public answers, such as the branches for a pincode, are kept for a while so the next lookup is quicker, but nothing links them to you.
