About this tool

Paste your text, type what to find and what to put in its place. Matches are counted and highlighted as you type, and the replaced text appears next to your original. Switch on regular expressions to use patterns and groups such as $1. A mistake in the pattern shows a clear message, and a pattern that runs too long is stopped so the page keeps working.

Common questions

How do I use groups in a replacement?

Turn on Regular expression, put parentheses around the parts to keep, and write $1, $2 and so on in the replacement. For example, find (\d+)-(\d+) and replace with $2-$1 to swap two numbers. Use $<name> for named groups and \n for a new line.

What does Whole word do?

It only matches the text when it is not inside a longer word, so cat does not match concatenate. It also works for Hindi and other scripts.

What if my pattern freezes?

Some patterns with nested repeats, like (a+)+$, can take extremely long on certain text. The search runs in the background and is stopped after two seconds with a message, so the page never locks up.

Is it free to use?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so what you enter stays on your device.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
