About this tool
Prepare a tax invoice with the details Rule 46 of the CGST Rules asks for. Your GSTIN is checked as you type, and the tool picks CGST and SGST or IGST by comparing the supplier's state with the place of supply. This doesn't file an e-invoice with the government portal, and it isn't tax advice.
Common questions
Does this create an e-invoice?
No. It makes a PDF tax invoice and doesn't connect to the Invoice Registration Portal, so there's no IRN or signed QR code. If e-invoicing applies to you, because your turnover in any year since 2017-18 passed the notified limit (₹5 crore when this was written), you must report the invoice through the portal.
How does it decide between IGST and CGST with SGST?
It compares the supplier's state with the place of supply. The same state means CGST and SGST, or UTGST in a union territory with no legislature. Different states mean IGST. You set the place of supply, so check it's right for your sale.
How many HSN digits do I need?
Under Notification 78/2020-Central Tax, businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore give 4 digits on B2B invoices, and those above it give 6. Rules change, so ask your accountant if you aren't sure.
Does a valid GSTIN mean the business is registered?
Not quite. The check confirms the pattern, the state code and the check character, which catches typing mistakes. To see if a number is active, search for it on the GST portal.
Is it free to use?
Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
Is what I enter kept?
It's only used to get your result. Some public answers, such as the branches for a pincode, are kept for a while so the next lookup is quicker, but nothing links them to you.
