About this tool

A hash is a short fingerprint of some data. Change one character and the whole fingerprint changes. Type text or choose a file to get several hashes at once. Big files are read in small pieces, so they don't fill your memory. MD5 and SHA-1 are marked, because they are no longer safe for security.

Common questions

Why are MD5 and SHA-1 marked as unsafe?

Different files can be made to share the same MD5 or SHA-1 hash on purpose. They still catch accidental damage, but use SHA-256 or SHA-3 where security matters.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It is read in your browser and never leaves your device.

Can a hash be reversed?

No. A hash is one-way. Short or common inputs can be guessed, which is why passwords need a slow hash and not these.

Is it free to use?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so what you enter stays on your device.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
