About this tool

Base64 turns any data into plain letters and digits, which is how files are placed inside emails, JSON and data URLs. Type text or open a file to encode it. Text is converted as UTF-8, so Hindi and emoji work. Choose the URL-safe version, with - and _ instead of + and /, for tokens and web addresses.

Common questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide a password or a secret. It only changes how data is written.

What is URL-safe Base64?

Standard Base64 uses + and /, which have special meanings in web addresses. The URL-safe form uses - and _ instead, and often leaves out the = padding.

Why is the output bigger than the input?

Base64 writes every 3 bytes as 4 characters, so the result is about one third larger.

Is it free to use?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so what you enter stays on your device.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
