About this tool
Retyping Hindi from a scan takes hours. Add a photo, a scanned page or a PDF, and get Devanagari text in Unicode, ready to paste into Word, Google Docs or an email. PDFs are read from the page image, because many Hindi PDFs hold garbled text behind pages that look fine. Printed type works well, including older books, but expect to fix a few matras and joined letters.
Common questions
Why are some matras wrong?
Devanagari is harder to read by machine than English. Small marks above and below the line can be missed, and old type makes letters like ब and व look alike. Read the result through before using it.
Will the text work in Word?
Yes. The result is standard Unicode, so it pastes into any modern program. It isn't in an old font encoding such as Kruti Dev.
My page has some English words too. Will those be read?
This page expects Hindi, so English words may come out wrong. Image to Text has a mixed Hindi and English setting, but Hindi becomes less accurate with it, so use it only when a page has a lot of English.
Is it free to use?
Yes. There's no sign-up, and nothing is added to your file unless you ask for it.
What happens to my files?
Your files are only used to run the tool you chose, and they're deleted automatically after about 24 hours.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It all works in your browser, on any computer or phone.
