How to calculate your vehicle's mileage
- Enter the odometer reading at the first full fill-up.
- Enter the reading at the next full fill-up and how much went in.
- Read your mileage, and the cost per km if you add the price.
Examples
Odometer 12,450 km at one full fill-up and 12,830 km at the next, with 25 litres filled: 380 km / 25 = 15.2 km/l. At ₹105 a litre that fill cost ₹2,625, about ₹6.91 a km.
A CNG car that goes from 30,000 km to 30,260 km on 10 kg: 26 km/kg.
An EV that went 210 km on 30 kWh: 7 km/kWh, or 142.86 Wh/km.
About this tool
The mileage in a brochure comes from a standard test, so your own figure is often different. Fill the tank to full, note the odometer, drive as usual, then fill to full again and note the odometer and how much went in. This page divides the distance by that amount. It works for petrol and diesel, CNG and electric vehicles, and can pass the result to the trip cost calculator.
Common questions
What is the formula for mileage?
Mileage = distance driven / fuel used. 380 km on 25 litres is 380 / 25 = 15.2 km/l.
Why fill the tank to full both times?
Then the amount that goes in the second time is exactly what the drive used. With a part fill, the figure is guesswork.
How do I work it out for an EV?
Use the kWh the charger or the car shows for the charge. 210 km on 30 kWh is 7 km/kWh, or 1000 x 30 / 210 = 142.86 Wh/km.
Why is my mileage lower than the company's figure?
Brochure figures come from a standard test. Traffic, AC use, speed, tyre pressure and load all change real mileage.
