About this tool

Lock a file before you store it in the cloud or send it. The file is encrypted in small chunks with AES-256-GCM, so large files work and any change or cut-off is detected when you decrypt. The file never leaves your device. A lost password can't be recovered by anyone, so keep it safe.

Common questions

How big a file can I encrypt?

Chrome and Edge save files over 256 MB straight to disk, so very large files work. In other browsers the result is built in memory first, which limits the size.

Can other programs open the .enc file?

No, the format is this tool's own, and it is described on the page. Keep this site or the format notes if you will need it years from now.

What if the file is damaged?

Decryption stops with an error and the output is discarded, so you never get a silently corrupted file.

Is it free to use?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so what you enter stays on your device.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
