  1. Type or paste Hindi in Devanagari.
  2. Choose plain letters, ISO 15919 or IAST, and how to use capitals.
  3. Copy the result or download it as a TXT file.

Examples

Names: नरेंद्र मोदी gives Narendra Modi, and अमिताभ बच्चन gives Amitabh Bachchan.

An address: मकान नंबर 12, गांधी नगर, जयपुर gives Makan Nambar 12, Gandhi Nagar, Jaypur. The city spells itself Jaipur, so a form needs that change.

A message: with long vowels doubled and capitals at the start of each sentence, आप कैसे हैं? gives Aap kaise hain?

One word in each style: कृष्ण is kr̥ṣṇa in ISO 15919, kṛṣṇa in IAST and Krishna in plain letters.

About this tool

Turn Devanagari into English letters, for a name on a form, an address, or a message to someone who can't read Hindi. Plain style drops the a that Hindi doesn't say, so राम comes out as Ram and कमला as Kamla. Exact styles keep every letter, with accents, for study and references.

Common questions

Why is राम written Ram and not Rama?

Hindi doesn't say the a at the end of राम, so plain style leaves it out. It also drops a middle a where speech does, as in कमला → Kamla and समझना → samajhna. Exact styles keep every a: rāma.

Will it spell my name the way I do?

Not always. Many names have a settled spelling that no rule can know, such as सिंह → Singh. Use the result as a start and change it to match your documents.

What's the difference between ISO 15919 and IAST?

Both are exact and use accents. IAST was made for Sanskrit and writes ए as e and ऋ as ṛ. ISO 15919 writes ए as ē and ऋ as r̥, and keeps ṛ for ड़, so Hindi words with ड़ stay clear.

How are ड़ and ढ़ written?

As r and rh, the spelling used for official place names such as Chhattisgarh and Chandigarh. Many people write d and dh in messages instead, as in ladka, so edit them if you prefer.
