About this tool
Text copied from page source, feeds and databases is often full of entities such as &, " and ’. Paste it here and they become the characters they stand for. Both named entities and decimal or hexadecimal numbers are handled, including Hindi letters and emoji. Entities the tool does not recognise are left as they are and listed.
Common questions
Does & become & or &?
It becomes &. Text is decoded once, the way a browser does it. Decode the result again if the text was encoded twice.
Does it handle numbers like –?
Yes. Numbers from 128 to 159 are read as Windows-1252 characters, as browsers do, so – gives an en dash.
What happens to an unknown entity?
It is left unchanged and shown in a note under the boxes. A name without a closing semicolon, like &, is also left alone.
Is it free to use?
Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. This tool runs inside your browser, so what you enter stays on your device.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
