About this tool

Paste a paragraph or a whole essay and see how many sentences it has. A full stop after Dr., Mr. or an initial does not end a sentence, and neither does the dot in 3.14 or a web address. Question marks, exclamation marks, ellipses and the Hindi danda (।) all end one.

Common questions

Does Dr. Smith count as two sentences?

No. Common abbreviations like Dr., Mr., Mrs., etc. and p.m. are recognised, so the sentence carries on. A rare abbreviation may still be split, so treat the number as a close count for unusual text.

What about a full stop followed by a lower case letter?

It is treated as the middle of a sentence, because a new sentence normally starts with a capital letter. This keeps names like e.g. or v2.0 from splitting.

Can it count Hindi sentences?

Yes. The danda (।) and the double danda (॥) end a sentence, just like a full stop.

Is it free to use?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and you can use it as often as you like.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs inside your browser, so what you enter stays on your device.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works in your browser on a computer or a phone.
