How to generate subtitles
- Add a video or audio file.
- Choose the language spoken, or leave it to be detected.
- Select Subtitle Generator, then download the SRT or VTT file.
Examples
A 10-minute English talk filmed on a phone. Add the MP4, leave the language on Detect it for me, and download the SRT file. Then use Add Subtitles to Video to put it in the video as a track, or to burn it in.
A short Hindi interview. Choose Hindi rather than leaving it to be detected, because detection can guess wrong on a short clip. Then read the lines through, paying attention to names.
Captions for a video on your own website. Download the VTT file, which is the format the HTML track element uses.
About this tool
Writing subtitles by hand means typing every line and timing it. This tool listens to the speech in your video or recording and writes the subtitle files for you, with each subtitle timed to when it's spoken and no more than two short lines long. A speech recognition model writes the words, so read them through before you publish.
Common questions
Should I download the SRT or the VTT file?
Use SRT for most video players, video editors and YouTube. Use VTT for a video on a web page. Both hold the same lines and timings.
How long is each subtitle?
Up to about 84 characters, on no more than two lines, which is a comfortable amount to read at once. A long sentence is split across several subtitles, with the time shared out by how much text each one holds.
Does it say who is speaking?
No. The subtitles hold the words only, with no speaker names.
Which languages work?
English, Hindi and Marathi. English is the most accurate and Hindi is usually close behind. Marathi needs the most checking.
Is it free to use?
Yes. You can use it without an account a few times a day, and a free account raises the daily limit. Nothing is added to your file unless you ask for it.
What happens to my files?
Your files are only used to run the tool you chose, and they're deleted automatically after about 24 hours.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It all works in your browser, on any computer or phone.
