A 4000 × 3000 photo: Fill keeps a 4000 × 1481 band across the middle and scales it to 851 × 315. Choose Keep the top if heads are near the top of the photo.

A 4000 × 3000 group photo with people at the edges: choose Show the whole photo and turn on the safe area. The photo goes inside the 560 × 315 middle, the 16:9 view, at 420 × 315, with a blur around it.

A detailed photo can pass 100 KB at full quality. The quality is then lowered step by step until the file is under 100 KB, and the size stays 851 × 315.

Why does my cover look different on my phone?

Facebook's help says covers show at 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on phones, and may be cropped to fit other screens. Keep faces and text inside the 16:9 frame in the preview, and they show in both.

Will my profile picture cover part of it?

Yes. Facebook says the profile picture partly covers the left side of the cover photo, so keep important details away from that side.
