How to remove silence from audio
- Add your audio file.
- Choose how quiet counts as silence and the shortest pause to cut.
- Select Remove Silence from Audio and download the shorter file.
Examples
A lecture recorded on a phone, with long gaps while the speaker writes on the board. Keep -40 dB, cut pauses longer than 1 second and leave 0.3 seconds. Each 6-second gap shrinks to 0.3 seconds, while the shorter pauses between sentences stay as they were.
A podcast with a fan humming in the background. If the result says no pause was long enough, the hum is louder than -40 dB. Choose -30 dB, and the hum counts as silence, so the pauses can be shortened.
A voice note with 4 seconds of silence before you start talking and 3 seconds after you finish. With the default settings, both shrink to 0.1 seconds, half of the 0.2 seconds left in each pause.
About this tool
Long pauses make a lecture, podcast or voice note drag. This tool finds every pause longer than the length you set and shortens it, leaving a small gap so the end of one word and the start of the next are never cut off. Shorter pauses are left alone, so speech keeps its natural rhythm. MP3, M4A, WAV and FLAC files stay in their own format.
Common questions
Will it cut off the start or end of my words?
It shouldn't. Part of every shortened pause is kept, half after the sound before it and half before the sound after it. If quiet word endings still sound clipped, leave more silence in each pause, or choose -50 dB so only near-total silence counts.
Which silence level should I choose?
-40 dB suits most recordings made in a quiet room. Choose -30 dB if there's a hum or background noise in the pauses, and -50 dB for a clean studio recording where only true silence should go.
Is silence at the start and end removed too?
Yes, when it's longer than the shortest pause you chose. It's cut like any other pause but keeps only half the silence you chose, so the file begins and ends close to the first and last sound.
Does it lower the sound quality?
WAV and FLAC files stay lossless. MP3, M4A and other compressed files are re-encoded at a bitrate close to the original, which is needed to cut them at exact moments.
Is it free to use?
Yes. You can use it without an account a few times a day, and a free account raises the daily limit. Nothing is added to your file unless you ask for it.
What happens to my files?
Your files are only used to run the tool you chose, and they're deleted automatically after about 24 hours.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It all works in your browser, on any computer or phone.
